5 Slow Living Practices to Enjoy a Rainy Day at Thehuteyam Shepherds Hut in Eyam
Rainy days are great for slowing down and embracing a gentler pace.
A rainy afternoon is an opportunity to enjoy simple, mindful activities, disconnect from the rush of everyday life and reconnect with yourselves and the peaceful surroundings.
Here are our 5 slow living practices to help you make the most of a rainy day in our little green hut.

1. Read a Book in the Warmth of the Hut
The bookshelf in the little green hut has an eclectic mix of subjects, from short novels, poetry, guides to inspire your next adventure & even a book on how to build a treehouse! We think one of the most restful ways to spend a rainy day is by diving into a good book. With the snug and cosy atmosphere inside, it is the perfect place for curling up with your book of choice.
& with the gentle patter of rain on the tin roof, it really does create a calming background soundtrack, to lose yourself in a story for an hour or two. Wrap yourself up in a blanket with a hot cup of tea.....
It really isn't just about passing time; it’s about slowing your thoughts down and allowing yourself to be fully present in the moment.

2. Play Games or Solve a Crossword Puzzle
Playing games or doing puzzles is another excellent way to enjoy a rainy day without rushing. There is a deck of cards, board games, or a crossword puzzle book for you to use. Focus and get creative but keep the mood light and fun.
Playing games together = laughter, conversation & deeper connections. Crosswords and puzzles, on the other hand, need a bit more focus & brain power!
Thehuteyam's intimate space is perfect for any of these activities. The calm interior and peaceful surroundings make it easy to settle in, enjoy the moment without distractions even on a wet & rainy day.

3. Listen to the Radio for a Touch of Nostalgia
Maybe not something you would think to do for relaxation at home, but listening to the radio is a gentle slow living practice that reconnects you with a simpler form of entertainment. Whether you tune into local stations, classical music, or storytelling programs, the radio can offer a way to engage with the world outside without screens or interruptions.
When you arrive, you will find the radio on playing soft classical music in the background. After so many compliments in the guest book, this is something that you might find especially soothing during a relaxing rainy afternoon.
Try exploring different stations or programs you wouldn’t usually listen to. We are converts to occasional classical music after visits to hotels who play calm music in the background of rooms as you check in. It's one of the main reasons we have a DAB radio in the little green hut, a perfect way to embrace the slow rhythm of a rainy day.
4. Relax and Take a Snooze
Sometimes the best way to spend a rainy day is simply to rest. With a comfy bed & bedding, we offer you a peaceful retreat here where you can lie back, close your eyes, and let the gentle sounds of rain lull you into a restful nap.
Napping is a powerful way to recharge your body and mind. It improves mood, boosts creativity, and enhances memory. How often do you allow yourself the time to rest without guilt or distraction?
Grab a soft pillow and blankets, turn of the electric lights & just allow the natural light dim through the shutters and rest deeply without feeling rushed.

5. Take the Umbrella and Walk into Eyam Village to Visit a Cafe or Pub
If the rain is light and you feel adventurous, grab the umbrella hung up on the coat hooks and take a slow walk down into Eyam.
Eyam has excellent cafes and a traditional pub, where you can warm up & dry out with a hot drink & cake or a beer & hearty meal.
We love walking in the rain, particulalry up the lane & under the trees. It somehow enhances your senses, & we often find oursleves noticing the little things, raindrops on the trees & the fresh natural smells after a downpour. It's a simple way to enjoy the day, rain included.

On rainy days at Thehuteyam we invite you to slow down and savour the moment. Don't see it as a negative, embrace the time to rest & maybe do something you probably wouldn't do at home. Afterall, there are no chores to catch up on when you are away for a night or two.
Slow living practices really do help you appreciate the peaceful surroundings even more and make your stay in our little corner of the Peak District even more restorative than you might think.
We hope to see you here soon, whatever the weather, Rachel, Haydn & Gilbert xxx
