We think that taking a summer walk that combines fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a relaxing pub visit is a perfect way to spend an afternoon or catch a sunset. This round walk from Thehuteyam door to the Barrel Inn at Bretton via Sandy Lane is a secret little wander that offers just that.
Along the shortish route, you will find places ideal for resting, enjoying nature, and soaking in the incredible views. Pack a picnic, stop & pause savour our beautiful quieter little corner of the Peak District.
Before heading back, a stop at the Barrel Inn is a must for a refreshing alfresco drink to complete the afternoon/evening.
This guide will walk you through the route, highlight a place or two to stop, and suggest what to bring for a comfortable and enjoyable mini adventure.

Starting Point: Thehuteyam or the Free Public Car Park on Hawkhill Road
Leave the free carpark & head up the hill, taking the first left turn onto The Nook. This turns into an unmade road but is still a BOAT (Byway Open to all traffic) so take care for bikes & even 4x4's.
The Nook is a windy unmade path, uneven in places so be sure to wear sensible shoes. It is 0.5miles long, steep & brings you out at the small hamlet of Highcliffe, Eyam.
At the top turn left, pass the houses on your left (look for the trap house) & continue along the road (after 250m you will pass a small holding on your left) until you reach the right angled bend (another 250m) at Sir William Hill.

Take a left around the corner, after 20 metres take a right turn - this is known locally as Sandy Lane.
After about 30 minutes of walking, you will reach Sandy Lane. This quiet lane is a great place to pause and take in the views. The lane is lined with mature trees and wildflowers (wild Orchids in June), making it a lovely spot for some piccys or a short rest.
Why Stop Here?
Shady spots perfect for a quick break
Wildlife sightings such as birds and butterflies
Ideal picnic spot if you want to start your lunch early, but if you can wait the final destination is a jaw dropping view, trust us.
You'll wander along here (aprox 200m) until you leave the small woodland glade on your right behind you. Don't be tempted to take the wooden stile over the cattle grid, keep going!

Aproximately 50m past this point, there is a wooden public footpath sign to Bretton Clough & Abney Turn right & take this grass path along under the trees. Keep the fence on your left hand side & continue along 250/300m, through the gate & until the dry stone wall on your left finishes.

T-dah! You have reached your sunset seeking destination. Find a spot in the field on your left & settle down to watch the sunset, spread out your rug, pop the fizz, relax & enjoy the peace, there really is noone else around & the uninterrupted views go on for miles.
What to Expect
Wide open views of the surrounding countryside
Clear, gravel or grass paths & limited road suitable for most walkers
Fresh air and nature to help you unwind
Wildlife spotting dear, birds, hedgerow flowers

Make sure to check the weather before you leave and dress accordingly. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as the terrain varies from grassy fields to gravel paths.
Final Destination: Barrel Inn at Bretton
The walk continues to the Barrel Inn, a charming pub known for its welcoming atmosphere and incredible views.
This is the perfect place to stop & relax with an alfresco drink before heading back down in to Eyam.
What Makes the Barrel Inn Special?
Outdoor seating with views of the surrounding countryside
Friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere
Local ales and seasonal drinks to enjoy
Incredible Views of 5 counties

If you arrive in time for sunset, the pub’s garden at the front provides a beautiful backdrop. It’s also a good spot to meet fellow walkers or locals.
The route back down is fairly simple, turn left out of the Barrel Inn & continue walking along the road. It isn't busy but take care as thee are some blind summits & corners. After 300ish metres you will be back at the right hand bend you took previously, this time turn right & retrace your steps back to Highcliff & eventually The Nook.
Timewise, this route should take aproximately 1.5 hours if you walk continuously. allowing for picnics & pub stop, you could take all afternoon &/or evening!
This is one of our favourite local walks, It's not in a guide book, which makes it quite the secret place to explore. We call it the "Basil field". Our old faithful dog has his ashes scattered there. We like to visit, sit, remember & make new memories.
